چکیده

Seismicity affecting the low eastern flank of Mt. Etna shows clustering in time. We analysed a catalog of microearthquakes recorded by the four stations of the Osservatorio Sismologico di Protezione Civile di Acireale during the period 1989–1994. In general a strong deviation from periodic and random distribution was found. The temporal clustering is scale invariant and a fractal dimension can be derived to characterize it. Fractal dimensions seem to be correlated to the beginning of two major eruptions. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Deep Earthquakes as a Precursor of the September- October 1989 Flank Eruption at Mt. Etna Volcano (italy)

The September-October 1989 flank eruption at Mt. Etna marked a change in the recent eruptive style of the volcano. Seismicity, at mid (order of months) and short (order of days) time, preceding the eruption onset has been analysed by means of D (time fractal dimension), and of materials science equation. The behaviour of the upper and lower crust volumes has been investigated, by considering sh...

Capturing the fingerprint of Etna volcano activity in gravity and satellite radar data

Long-term and high temporal resolution gravity and deformation data move us toward a better understanding of the behavior of Mt Etna during the June 1995 - December 2011 period in which the volcano exhibited magma charging phases, flank eruptions and summit crater activity. Monthly repeated gravity measurements were coupled with deformation time series using the Differential Synthetic Aperture ...

FIFTEEN YEARS OF ERS AND ENVISAT DInSAR OBSERVATIONS AT MT. ETNA (ITALY) BY USING THE SBAS APPROACH

We exploited the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) technique and computed ground displacement maps and time series by inverting 283 interferograms generated from the ascending and 289 from the descending orbits to reveal Mt. Etna surface deformation from 1992 to 2006. Our analysis shows that the volcano experienced magmatic inflation/deflation and radial spreading of the west, south and east flanks....

Flank instability at Mt. Etna

Due to their constant and relatively rapid growth, volcanic edifices are inherently unstable. Flank instability is observed at many polygenetic stratovolcanoes, composite volcanoes and shield volcanoes worldwide. Flank instability may occur suddenly, or develop in a more continuous and subtle way, accelerated by triggering events (magma emplacement, eruptions and earthquakes). Destabilization i...

Identifying seismicity patterns leading flank eruptions at Mt. Etna Volcano during 1981-1996

Seismicity time properties of the Etna Volcano (Italy) are investigated through a systematic pattern recognition analysis. Mean Hypothesis Testing (MHT) has been applied to a long time database of instrumental data recorded from 1981 to 1996 to identify relevant correlation among seismic patterns, main seismogenic volumes and the eight flank eruptions occured in the same period. Time evolution ...
